All about Firefox 3.5, Weave, Ubiquity, and Taskfox

So I’ve made the upgrade to Firefox 3.5 on all my computers and it’s nice to see it incorporate many of the features already present in IE8 and Chrome.  For the full details of the new version, check out this link.  I would say one of the features I like the most is the ability to drag a tab off into a separate window and then drag it back.  Very convenient.  Never found much use for the private browsing feature.  If I was that concerned about where I was visiting, I’d erase my history using CCleaner.  But on the most part, I like a history of my previous visitations on the web.

Two nice add-ons that improve the browsing experience are: Weave Sync and Ubiquity, and the future promises: TaskFox.

Weave Sync: In fact, Firefox 3.5 supports Weave, a syncing service for all your Firefox installations.  It allows you to sync all your tabs, bookmarks, browsing history, and passwords between computers.  This is useful.  However, I’m hesitant to sync password information onto the cloud.  But the rest of the information can be quite useful to have constantly updating from browser to browser.  Over time, if it works correctly, I’m imagining that it will save a lot of unnecessary keystrokes.

Ubiquity: I’m also looking forward to the incorporation of Ubiquity into the address bar with TaskFox.  It’s a future addition to come in Firefox 3.6.  Ubiquity is a cool add-on that allows common language commands to perform complex tasks.  (i.e. add events to Google Calendar, post to Twitter, convert web pages to PDFs, define words, and much more) with simple commands.

It uses commands like below:

add-to-calendar Meet Mom for lunch on Friday adds an event to Google Calendar
twit I am trying out Ubiquity posts status message to Twitter

Until TaskFox is released, Ubiquity is a promising technology to experiment with. I love how the browser is become more functional with each update.  And glad to see Chrome and IE8 around to give Firefox ideas for improvement.
