Writing the Wrong Way

Write your first book online with FortyChapters, we’ll show you how.

Here’s an idea.  Sign up with our service and we will help you write your novel online.  Think of the novelty of being able to access your novel wherever you go and access it on any computer.  In other words, Google Documents with some common sense writing advice as you go, and the best part is it only costs $10 a month to keep writing.

This is where technology services miss the mark.  First of all, I would never want to trust an outside provider with my novel or my ideas.  Not only do I feel nervous with them hosting my content, but I’d worry about someone hacking into their system and accessing my work.  To have to pay for the service is perplexing.  It creates little popup windows for your characters, your acts, and your chapters.  If I want to spend money on software, it would be for Microsoft Word.  I can just as easily use Google Documents to type up notes for free, and then type it at home on my computer in Word.

I’m wondering sometimes if some of this services are created for a need.  Is there a single writer out there that would even see this valuable?  Do any established writers use this service?  And how many authors in the future will say, thank you Forty Chapters for your great assistance.  I don’t even see any great tips on writing in my exploration of the site.
Please, if you want to offer something useful, create an online free version of Final Draft.  These artificial structures are not compelling enough to use regularly and pay to use.
